Please give a brief overview of your business and what you offer couples.

Didea Weddings is part of Didea Events and Entertainment, a company based in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We are a company offering destination wedding planning but also entertainment services (live music, dance shows) and event rentals. Collaborating only with private venues and beach locations, we are able to create dream weddings from scratch. Our packages are entirely tailored to the couple’s unique preferences. Having a connection to all the right vendors and talent in Punta Cana allows us to combine and offer the best possible services to our clients. Not many people know this, but in Punta Cana you can get married off-resort and have a completely intimate wedding. No matter what hotel the couple and their guests stay at, we organize transport to and from our exclusive venues.

What do you love about small weddings and/or elopements?

The intimacy at small weddings is something that has always inspired us. It is the main reason why at Didea we work only with private wedding locations. You simply cannot get that type of privacy getting married at a hotel.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

The entire process of planning a small wedding is more personal. Everything is one hundred per cent about the couple. They are not stressed and having to worry about too many guests, which allows them to relax and fully enjoy their wedding day. With tiny weddings everything flows, in a way.

Give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on and what you did for the couple?

There are many things all weddings have in common, even the tiniest ones: there is always decoration, flowers, an aisle, a photographer to capture every moment. But I would like to point out the importance of tiny details that can add so much value to a wedding. Once, a couple asked for a unique choreography prepared for their first dance on a song that was meaningful to them. As I said in the beginning, at Didea we work with dance classes as well, so we were able to organize dance lessons with our choreographer. Even though they had little time to practice, they danced it beautifully. Their ten guests were totally blown away and they all had such an amazing time. Being able to make someone’s special day even more special is extremely fulfilling.

What makes you unique in the service you can offer a couple planning a smaller wedding?

First of all, the venues that we work with are all private. Punta Cana is a well-known wedding destination and there is so much more to it than just the big resorts. A wedding at a beautiful, intimate location by the Caribbean Sea is an experience of a lifetime. Secondly, we tailor every wedding package based on every couple’s preferences. This results in a unique, personalized wedding package. In my opinion pre-armed packages are to be avoided in this industry, especially when it comes to tiny weddings. Lastly, as a company offering wedding planning but also entertainment services and event rentals, we have absolutely everything a couple needs for their big day. Some like a guitar player to play their special song while walking down the isle, others prefer a fire show to amaze their guests… with us, the possibilities are countless.

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

There is definitely an increase in tiny weddings, especially when it comes to destination weddings. Couples just want to elope or have up to 10 of their closest friends and family with them. There are many reasons for this, but I think the main one is the stress and pressure of having to plan a big wedding, especially from abroad. Even though it is more complicated to plan a big destination wedding, the entire process can be absolutely stress-free for the couple, if the wedding planner is good at their job.

If you could work on a tiny wedding anywhere in the world, any theme, any couple; where or what or whom would it be?

I am very happy where I am now: On one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands, surrounded by breath-taking nature and doing what I love with people from all over the globe. It’s the best feeling in the world!

Tiny Weddings Fair Exhibitor – Hazel Buckley Photographer

Tiny Weddings Fair - Hazel Buckley Photographer

Today we make another addition to our interview series with exhibitors who will be at the Tiny Weddings Fair on 30th Sept at the Wycombe Swan.  We’re very excited to have the hugely experienced and talented photographer Hazel Buckley at our fair.  She began her career in journalism, and she feels that affects her style as a wedding photographer.  So, she is queen of capturing the candid moments that show the emotion of your wedding.

Please introduce yourself.

I am a wedding photographer based in Berkshire and I have photographed a lot of weddings over fourteen years – I’ve lost count, to be honest.  I was a newspaper shooter for some time but switching to weddings was one of the best things I ever did.  My photo-journalistic background means I document the story of your day – your love story

I adore meeting new people, I get to travel (how lucky am I?) but mostly I am passionate about making pictures for people! I’m lost without my camera and I love it almost as much as I love my two sons. I never get bored of photographing weddings – each  being individual and exclusive to the next – I have the best job in the world.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

I have noticed that fewer people at a wedding means less stress.  It’s all about them and the celebration.  Nobody is worried about the flowers that aren’t quite the ‘right shade of pink’ or if they can get the older relatives up the stairs – of course these things are important for bigger weddings – but it just doesn’t happen at smaller weddings.  People are more relaxed – traditions are thrown out of the window and replaced by a unique and creative way of saying ‘I do’.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

I have photographed lots of big, beautiful weddings throughout my career but it’s the smaller ones that I remember the most. It simple really – tiny weddings are about the people.  The couples choose exactly who they want there with them – I have never seen one smart phone recording or taking pictures at a tiny wedding but I have seen true emotion from the guests which I can capture and share with them later.

Can you give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on?

The tiniest wedding I photographed was a couple in Perth, Australia. It was just the two of them plus the celebrant in their garage! They asked me to be their witness too – which was my privilege.

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

I have worked mostly with big weddings but I’ve had more enquiries for smaller wedding of late and I have seen a lot on social media.  I think some couples are loving the locations open to them for tiny wedding which means their wedding pictures can have some of the most amazing back drops.  I also believe couples who chose to have a tiny wedding spend the day embracing each other, the love and emotion which sometimes at a big wedding can get lost in a crowd when I see couples going their separate ways to chat to friends and family.

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

I don’t do business any differently, really.  I like working with people and I feel I give my best to whoever contacts me.  However, saying that, I guess one difference would be that I can give the couple more of my attention with a smaller wedding.  Sometimes at a larger weddings I have felt as though I’m trying to please lots of people – even when the bride or groom have specifically asked for something and another relative doesn’t agree!  At tiny weddings I have only a few people to please and we can spend lots of time chatting, or emailing about the day.  And usually if there are guests they have surrounded themselves with ‘like-minds’.

If you could create something for a tiny wedding anywhere in the world, any theme, any couple; where or what or whom would it be?

Wow what a question!  I’m not sure if it would be New York, Iceland, Scotland, then again maybe on the beach in Greece.  Lets go with New York – a snowy, stylish affair in Central Park… no I’ve changed my mind lets go to Iceland.  I visited Iceland recently and fell in love with the place – such beautiful passionate people and the land just takes your breath away.  I don’t know enough about it to organise a wedding there but I would happily follow any couple and their planner to any part of it!  I mention Scotland because that is another place I love and I was married there a long time ago now – just me, my husband our two best friends.  It was the perfect marriage for us – we laughed and cried all weekend – and drank too much whiskey – which you can get away with at a tiny wedding!

Tiny Weddings Fair Exhibitor – Marry Abroad

Tiny Weddings Fair Marry Abroad

Steph from Marry Abroad was be a very popular exhibitor at the first Tiny Weddings Fair on 30th Sept at the Wycombe Swan.  So, we are very happy to have her back at the second Tiny Weddings Fair to be held at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.  She gave a talk last time, on how to choose where to get married – which country and which location will suit what you need.  And she will be doing it again in Birmingham on the 10th March 2019.  Choosing on the right location is the first thing you need to do when you decide to have a destination wedding abroad, then finding the right wedding planner or venue is the second.  You can do both those things with Marry Abroad and their incredibly helpful website.

Tell us a little about what you do.

I run Marry Abroad, a website couples can use to find a wedding provider in a foreign country. They can then talk directly with the actual planner who will be arranging their wedding, which cuts out any middle man and also means the couple gets the best price possible for their wedding.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

I love the fact that often they are arranged very quickly. The couple decides they’d like to get married, they decide on a location and, because there aren’t lots of guests to herd around, they can book everything easily and just go and get married.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

I think tiny wedding couples are more decisive, as they’ve already decided not to do the traditional ceremony, and often they are more quirky. I’ve seen couples get married in Halloween outfits in a log cabin, or up a mountain in the snow – a tiny wedding can be more imaginative as there’s no concern about how all the guests will fit into the location.

Tiny Weddings - Marry Abroad Canada 2

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

As we don’t arrange the weddings ourselves there’s no real difference. Although often the tiny wedding couple will be looking to get married sooner, so sometimes there’s an availability issue with some wedding planners who are booked up years in advance.

Give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on and what you did for the couple?

I had an enquiry via our Facebook page two weeks ago for a gay couple who weren’t sure where exactly they’d like to marry, although they liked the idea of Canada or the USA. So I suggested some places to them, and after a few messages they decided they liked the idea of New York. So I passed their details to Claire of Wed in Central Park, and they’re getting married there in a couple of weeks’ time! So that would be four weeks from enquiry to ceremony. Which is pretty fast!

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

We’ve always had a lot of enquiries for couples who would just like to get married and not have a huge wedding (although we do have large enquiries too). Often tiny wedding couples don’t want to do the whole “meet with the wedding planner and talk through every detail” part, so, as we’re a website, they find it easier to just ask us online. We’ve also found that this year we’re getting a lot more enquiries via Facebook messenger from couples who don’t know exactly what they want.
