If you could be involved with a tiny wedding anywhere, where would it be?

All weddings are lovely but the thought of a wedding on a desert island would really appeal to me.

Why do think couples might of choose to have a smaller wedding?

Tiny weddings give couples the opportunity to totally personalise their wedding. I often hear brides having problems when the wedding is larger than planned; be it with the venue, catering, and even the table plan. Brides can lose control and struggle focus on what’s important to them. If the wedding is small the bride may not have to worry over bridesmaids and coordinated colours and it’s all down to her choice instead.

Do you think smaller weddings are on the rise among your clients?

I am definitely seeing more brides keeping guest numbers below fifty, not just because of finances but again down to choice and what’s important to the couple.  The smallest wedding of one of my brides was earlier in the year; in a beautiful tree house with just four guests.  It looked like an amazing venue and the bride looked stunning too.

TW blog titlesToday’s addition to our exhibitor interview series is with wedding stationery designer Hafsah, from Dusk Designs.  Come along to the Tiny Weddings Fair on 30th Sept at the Wycombe Swan to chat with her about her handmade cards and stationery.

Please tell us who you are and what your business does.

My name is Hafsah and alongside my full-time job as a children’s nurse in a busy hospital, I own a small design business online which predominately focuses on handmade stationery. My main clients tend to be those looking for wedding, baby or business branding stationery although I am always happy to try something new in an exciting bespoke order.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

I love the fact that because so much of the budget isn’t used up feeding and entertaining so many people (because let’s face it, more guests means more cost!), the couple has the scope to be nit-picky on little details. It’s often these small details that really make the day so pretty and special when looking back.

In terms of my business, I love the excitement of making elopement announcement cards for the couple to send out to their family and friends after they’ve tied the knot. I often work closely with their photographers and use raw images to bring the announcement alive.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

I myself had a massive wedding (about 150 guests) because I have a really big family and I spent a lot of the time stressing about what people were going to think. In hindsight, all that precious time could have been spent ensuring the day focused on what was important – the vow my husband and I had made to spend our lives together. I definitely think that the smaller the wedding, the more you can focus on what you want and not lose yourself in traditions and expectations. Tiny weddings are about the couple and not the guestlist!

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

Whilst all my work with couples is unique, tiny weddings allow for such a depth of personalisation and focus on small details that truly make the wedding memorable.

Give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on and what you did for the couple?

I recently created a bespoke wedding invitation collection for a relatively small wedding featuring laser-cut details and a gorgeous wax seal. The couple had a rough idea in mind and based on my previous work, they were able to pick out elements they liked which I then put together in one beautiful collection for them. The end result was stunning!

If you could work on a tiny wedding anywhere in the world, any theme, any couple; where or what or whom would it be?

I personally really like digital elements such as cartoon versions of the couple, of animals or objects that could mean a lot to them. I enjoy designing them and putting colour schemes and design elements together. I also have a love of shimmery laser cut pocket folds – which explains why I use these a lot in my work!

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

I feel as time passes by, a lot of weddings are becoming smaller. This is often due to cost but may also be that more and more couples are opening up to the idea of weddings being about the couple and not for their families, as weddings used to be for the generations before us.

Free Engagement Photo Sessions – Raffle Prizes with your Tiny Weddings Fair Ticket

free engagement shoot

It might seem a little illogical to have photographs taken shortly before you spend a whole day being photographed but engagement session can serve a purpose and also be a fun way to take some time out of wedding planning to remember why you are getting married in the first place.

Two of the photographers exhibiting at the Tiny Weddings Fair at the Wycombe Swan on 30th September have kindly offered a free engagement shoot as a raffle prize.  RS Brown Photography and Ayelle Photography will be at the Tiny Weddings Fair waiting to meet you, but if you want to get to know them better then an engagement session is a great way to do that.  All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is buy your tickets in advance.  Here are our reasons why an engagement shoot is a great idea…

Ayelle engagement tiny weddings 3

  1. Engagement session give you time to celebrate your relationship and share some quality time together.

Wedding planning, even for a tiny wedding, can be stressful and pile the pressure on you as a couple. It can seem like every conversation revolves around outfit, meal and venue choices and sometimes it’s nice to remember what those choices are really all about.

Whether it’s a few hours spent in your favourite location or half day spent sharing your hobbies and interests, an engagement shoot gives you plenty of opportunity to reconnect during the planning and the chance to celebrate a milestone in your relationship. Your engagement is a special time when you chose to commit to each other and a time to celebrate love and marriage prior to your wedding day.

  1. A chance to rehearse your wedding photos.

I am yet to find any couple where both parties enjoy having their photographs taken.  Even if you’re totally at ease in front of the lens the chances are your partner isn’t! If you’re struggling with the idea of being photographed on your wedding day or just feel like you never look good in photos it can be a great idea to get those nerves out of the way before the big day.

Getting used to posing in a way you are comfortable with, making sure you get over the giggles or find out what style you want your photos to be are important to getting great photos and, if you have no idea where to start, an engagement session can help you clarify what works for you. And the more you know the less anxious you will be about your wedding day photography.

  1. Perfect images for your wedding website.

If you’re eloping in secret or need to keep your small party on track with changing plans you are probably looking at having a wedding website where you guests can follow your adventures. It will amaze you how many terrible photos you have as a couple when you come to make it! Seriously! Wonky selfies with heads slightly cut off, badly lit party pictures or images of yourselves at other peoples weddings just won’t cut the mustard to get your wedding website up to date.

So what better way to share your joy with the world than filling your wedding website with beautiful new, professional pictures of you as a couple. Whatever your style, funny, classy, smart or glamorous you engagement photos will show your friends and family what to expect from your wedding day.

RS Brown engagement tiny weddings 3

  1. Help you decide on a certain style of photography or photographer.

You may not have any idea as to what style of photography you would like on your wedding day or you may have a selection of photographers that you like and want to see how you’ll get on with them during your wedding day. This is especially important if they might be a large percentage of your wedding guests! If you have 10 people accompanying your big day and 10% of them is your photographer you definitely want to make sure you get along and both parties understand what you’re looking for.

Working closely with a photographer can also give you a chance to learn the lingo and work out what you do and don’t like in style. You can take a selection of more formal photos alongside carefree, actions shots and see what suits you best. Learning to communicate what you want can be an experience in itself and it well worth getting right prior to your wedding!

Ayelle engagement tiny weddings 2

  1. It’s a great chance to try out new looks.

If you’re not sure what looks good on you, you can use your engagement sessions to try out different styles of hair, makeup and clothing. You may find that your idea of the perfect hair and clothing combination looks terrible in photographs or that your chosen cut of suit just doesn’t suit you!

What looks good in the mirror doesn’t always looks great on film and vice-versa. Your engagement shoot can give you the opportunity to try out different styles, get your hair style sorted, and make decisions on what is going to look best in your wedding photos.

Even for those who don’t necessarily feel “engaged” I would highly recommend having a small photo shoot before the day if your photos are important to you. It gives you more time during your wedding photos to get the images you want knowing you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.  RS Brown Photography and Ayelle Photography will be at the Tiny Weddings Fair at the Wycombe Swan on 30th September waiting to meet you.  They have both very kindly offered a free engagement shoot as a raffle prize.  If you’re looking to try some mini-sessions or book an engagement shoot before your big day then come along and speak with the photographers and videographers who specialise in intimate celebrations at the Tiny Weddings Fair.  All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is buy your tickets in advance.  And if you are one of the first 100 people to buy tickets then you’ll also get a goody bag on the day, but be quick because they are selling fast!

Tiny Weddings Fair Exhibitor – Ruffled By Grace

Tiny Weddings Fair Ruffled by Grace

Michelle is another fantastic exhibitor who will be at the Tiny Weddings Fair on 30th Sept at the Wycombe Swan.  The Rev. Michelle Wahila is originally from the US and now lives in Paris.  She has served as Associate Pastor of The American Church in Paris where she has organized many huge events reaching the expatriate community.  Now she performs weddings and blessings in Paris, possibly the most romantic city in the world.  Check out her website Ruffled by Grace.

Please give a brief overview of your business…

I am a classically trained and ordained pastor (Presbyterian Church, USA), and professional wedding officiant. I have been performing weddings since I was ordained in 2005. I am the creator and owner of Ruffled By Grace: Parisian Wedding Blessings. I try not to be your typical pastor. Because I don’t serve a particular church (I used to work full time in a parish), I am able to bless every couple desiring to be married/blessed/have their vows renewed. That means I get to practice radical welcome and hospitality to ALL people.

Because of my classical pastoral background and training, I can provide pre-marital counseling, in addition to ceremony writing and myriad other pastoral services such as baptisms, funerals, liturgy and curriculum. I am also a preacher, speaker, worship leader, and creator of specialized retreats. Bonus: I can include holy communion or other rituals of the church into the ceremony. Possibly my very favorite ceremony included communion in the Champ de Mars under the Eiffel Tower.

You’ll often find me running around Paris in my Converse sneakers and my clergy collar. I love helping couples create their dream destination wedding, and I adore all things “Paris. Above all, I desire to give “grace” to everyone who contacts me – whether they book or not. This means that I will go above and beyond to help with planning, details, and resources.

Additionally, I have made every effort to source other women entrepreneurs – so my champagne, photographer, hair and make up, florist, etc – all women business owners! I have curated a brilliant team of vendors for destination weddings, elopements, vow renewals, and family promise ceremonies in one of the most sought after destinations in the world. It’s truly a privilege.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

Couples planning larger weddings often focus on the reception details. While everyone loves a good party, sometimes other parts of the day seem to fly by because everyone is anxiously awaiting the reception!

Couples planning tiny weddings have the chance to focus more on the details of their ceremony proper. As an ordained pastor, and professional wedding officiant, I love to walk couples through the details that will make their ceremony unique and memorable. Whether it be readings, rituals, or a fairy tale send off, these details create memories that will last a lifetime. Similarly, I love when a couple takes the opportunity to have a first look and photos ahead of their ceremony. Tiny weddings typically have a much more flexible time schedule that allow for these precious moments to receive the time they deserve on the wedding day.

If you could work on a tiny wedding anywhere in the world, any theme, any couple; where or what or whom would it be?

I am kind of partial to Paris! I love the city backdrop for all of my tiny weddings; it’s truly the perfect backdrop for your ceremony and photos. Similarly, I would love to work in New York City. If I had to pick another non-urban location I would say, “take me to the beach!”

I also enjoy working with couples who are thinking “outside of the box” for their wedding day and ceremony. I may come out of a traditional faith background, but I am not a typical pastor! Many of my couples find me because of my modern take on faith and my dedication to radical welcome and hospitality – and that travels anywhere!

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

While all of my ceremonies and weddings are personalized and unique, tiny weddings have the opportunity to choose even more opportunities for personalization. For example, there are myriad locations that will allow a very small wedding parties to come and take advantage of their amazing views for a ceremony or wedding photos, that would not be an option for a large wedding party.

I work with all of my couples to create a day that incorporates their dreams into a workable schedule in the City of Light! Often couples want multiple locations in Paris for photos, an excellent restaurant or Picnic on the Champ de Mars, and other special details to create their wedding narrative. When you have the tiny wedding you can easily hop from location to location, and see the best Paris has to offer on your wedding day (while sipping champagne, of course).

RBG Paris RomanticPortraitsParis-12

Give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on and what you did for the couple?

All of my weddings are so incredibly special – it is hard to select just one! I especially love when a tiny wedding involves the children of the couple. One couple brought their young son with them, and I had the chance to create a candy jar ceremony for the family. The simple and fun ritual was a way for their son to be a part of the ceremony, and for the family to have a special “take home” reminder of their special day. What family doesn’t want a candy jar at their home to remind them of the sweetness of life together?

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

While Paris is always a draw for “dream” weddings, I do see more and more couples who are choosing to have an intimate “white wedding.” Gone are the days when having an “elopement” means running away from their families to get married. Some couples are bringing along their families for the vacation of a lifetime. Others are choosing a “just the two of us” wedding. Tiny weddings are remarkable because they can give you your fairy tale wedding without breaking the bank. For couples on a budget, a tiny wedding can provide exactly what they are dreaming of for their wedding day, along with a bonus honeymoon.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

Tiny weddings give you the opportunity to have an intimate celebration with your nearest and dearest. Whether you are celebrating with only your spouse or have immediate family and friends with you for your special day, a tiny wedding gives you the chance to create exactly the wedding and atmosphere you are hoping for, on exactly the budget you want. I love how tiny weddings can be as luxurious or as simple as a couple desires.
