Tiny Weddings Fair – Who are We?

Carly Straughan has been blogging about elopements at her blog Epic Elopement since her own elopement in 2015. When planning her own marriage she realised there was little information for those who wanted a small but awesome wedding without a huge price tag, Carly began seeking out suppliers of tiny weddings and elopements around the world. Beginning her career in wedding journalism, Carly moved into wedding planning and events management. Carly has planned and executed weddings, fairs and events for some of the UK’s most recognisable venues and attractions and works with events venues day to day as a consultant.

Claire Ady is a wedding planner, specialising in elopements and small destination weddings in Central Park, New York, for couples from all over the world. She has been running this business Wed in Central Park for over six years and has planned almost two hundred and fifty weddings so far. All of her weddings have had under fifty guests and most have between five and fifteen guests, and many of them have been elopements. She knows the tiny wedding market well. She knows what drives a couple to choose a tiny wedding and what values and priorities are popular for the couples that take this route.

The Wycombe Swan is an established wedding and events venue and have previously hosted successful wedding fairs. It is a well known events venue hosting hundreds of events each year from private parties through to large public fairs. They have a large social media following, town centre location, ample parking and regular visitors. It has two large exhibition spaces and space for workshops and talks.

The exhibitors will be chosen because they can offer something to the couples planning a small wedding. To ensure the success of future Tiny Weddings Fairs we need exhibitors to be relevant to the couples attending. This event will be full of vendors and service providers who are passionate about small weddings and elopements. We are looking for exhibitors who have been involved in this style of wedding before and know what couples want when planning a tiny wedding or elopement. All visitors will be offered a brochure from the fair to take home with them including suppliers who offer appropriate services from around the world. The couples visiting will be talking to lots of exhibitors on the day, and it is unlikely that they will make many decisions on the spot while at the fair. The contents of this brochure will help to keep the exhibitors in the memories of the couples, and help them to find more information on the people they have met on the day, should they wish to.

The talks and worskhops will provide genuinely useful information for couples considering and elopement or a small wedding. Many couples are interested in small and intimate wedding, but often they feel that they do not know enough about how to do it, or where to start. With this in mind, we will be presenting small talks and workshops throughout the day. Those who purchase tickets in advance will have preferential entry to these talks.

Tiny Weddings Fair – for Couples Planning an Elopement or Small Wedding

The Tiny Weddings Fair is an exciting new event; focusing on couples planning elopements and small, intimate weddings.  Recent industry surveys have shown that couples are reducing their guest lists, and not just to save money.  Many couples are having a smaller wedding to put the emphasis on themselves as a couple, and to provide a truly unique and memorable experience for their guests.

Many couples are choosing to disengage from the notion that a bigger guest list is better and beginning to avoid large mainstream suppliers and industry stalwarts.  More couples are choosing to elope, have a small destination wedding, or marry in their own backyard and recent surveys show that the total cost of weddings is falling, but spend per guest is increasing. This trend suggests that couples are cutting their guest lists to spend more on what is important to them. With fewer people present when a couple get married, they are more likely to show their true personalities, and include more unique and personal touches.

We, the organisers of this fair, have attended traditional wedding fairs and more alternative fairs, but eloping couples often don’t comfortably fit in to either niche.  We feel that a small wedding has specific requirements, and once couples have decided to keep their guest list small, they need suppliers who can help them with these particular needs.

Couples are changing with the times and choosing to focus on home ownership, raising a family or travelling rather than spending a large sum on extended family weddings. It’s also true that couples are getting married later in life; the average age is at a record high 26.5 for women and 28.5 for men – many people are already co-habiting or raising a family by the time they embark on marriage and this “right of passage” is no longer what it once was.

The first of these fairs will be held at the end of September – Sunday the 30th – chosen because it is the end of traditional wedding season.  Many couples who choose to elope or to have a tiny wedding do so after attending a few large traditional weddings themselves and have decided that this sort of thing is not for them.  We want to catch them just as they are looking for ideas and inspiration.
