Tiny Weddings Fair

Our second Tiny Weddings Fair will be held on 10th March 2019 at the Birmingham REP Theatre. There will be several returning wedding experts returning to the fair, but one of the first new exhibitors to sign up was Stephen, wedding photographer with SWJ Photography. Let’s allow him to introduce himself:

Please give a brief overview of who you are and what you do.

Hello!! I’m Stephen Williams (or Williams-Jones depending if you’re reading this before or after 21st February). I’m a wedding photographer focusing on natural, honest photography with a bit of a creative edge. I love a wheat field and a good window, but I mostly love telling the story of a couple their way – no stock posing, no strict dos and don’ts. Just capturing the day as it happens and making sure that my couples are relaxed and having a good time because that’s when we get the best photographs.

I’m a former teacher (which means I’m crazy organised and quick at replying to messages) who took the plunge in 2015 to go it alone and start a business! I absolute adore my job, I meet and work with incredible couples and play a part in making them feel special on their most incredible day. I’m currently planning my own tiny wedding and am so excited about having the small, intimate day I am planning.

cj swj photography tiny weddings fair

What do you love about small weddings?

I adore the relationships you can see on a small wedding day; when people really have the time to talk and spend quality time together. It also allows me to get to know everyone as well so they’re totally relaxed around me and feel comfortable to be themselves. I would love to photograph an elopement one day; the intimacy of an elopement is something that really appeals. Just two people wanting to cement their relationship and love for each other without the frills and pomp, just stripped back, simple and about them and who they are together.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

The biggest difference between those planning a larger wedding compared to a smaller group is that, with larger weddings, the couple tend to be thinking about what will make other people happy. With a smaller wedding you’ve got more freedom to create the day that you want without the restrictions of having to ‘please’ a lot of other guests.

kn swj photography tiny weddings fair

Do you feel there has been an increase in tiny weddings in the past few years or have you always worked with a lot of small wedding parties?

I have taken bookings for more and more smaller, more intimate weddings in the last year or so and have quite a few for 2019. I think a lot of people are now more conscious of budget as a main factor, but also they want to focus on the people who are most important to them (I know this is why my partner and I have planned our wedding the way we have) rather than inviting everyone they’ve ever met. I also think the freedom and flexibility that is available to couples when it comes to planning their wedding means there is so much more scope for just do what you want rather than having to stick to traditions which are now a little outdated.

nd swj photography tiny weddings fair

If you could work on a tiny wedding anywhere in the world, any theme, any couple; where or what or whom would it be?

I don’t care who the couple are as long as we get on and have a laugh, but I have two dream destinations to do a wedding.

Firstly I would love to do a wedding in Central Park in New York, especially in the Shakespeare Gardens (I’m a massive Shakespeare geek). I’d love to capture that small, intimate nature of a tiny wedding in a big city and play with the contrast of big and small, intimate and scale as well as capturing the energy of the Big Apple.

Secondly, I’d love to capture a wedding day in Sweden. Either on the southern archipelago of Gothenburg, on an island such as Vrångö or in a forest overlooking a lake (hopefully with boats!). Mostly because I am just utterly in love with Sweden but they just have some absolutely wonderful traditions when it comes to a Swedish wedding (or bröllop) and if it was around midsummer with flower crowns galore and a feast of crayfish you just can’t go wrong!

ka swj photography tiny weddings fair

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a couple planning a smaller wedding?

I treat every couple as an individual because they are. Every wedding is totally different and unique because as human beings we aren’t like anyone else and I think the best thing about the wedding industry at the moment is there is so much freedom and flexibility to do what you want.

With a couple planning a smaller wedding I usually spend more time getting to know them and offering a supportive presence so that on the day they feel more like there is a friend there. Someone who is there to support them and help the day run smoothly. Also it means they feel comfortable enough around me to be themselves and not be conscious of the cameras rather than, on a larger day, being able to get lost in the crowd to get those candid shots.

ms swj photography tiny weddings fair

What makes you unique in the service you can offer a couple planning a smaller wedding?

Flexibility for me is the key to working well with a couple. Whilst I have two main packages for weddings, these are mostly a ‘best fit’ that suit what I get asked for. So from the moment the first contact is made I treat every couple as in individual catering to what they want from their day from tailoring a package based on what they are looking for right the way through to the presentation of the images.

I think my previous experience helps me to be insanely calm under pressure and capable of solving a situation quickly. This has come in handy quite frequently from sewing mothers of the bride into their dresses, fixing the brides hair on the go right the way through to performing first aid on the groom’s aunt. I’m a people pleaser, so the most important thing to me is that at the end of the day my clients are happy and have had the most incredible wedding day so I will move mountains to make sure they feel incredible and have a wonderful wedding day.

Also I have an emergency bag that Mary Poppins would be jealous of containing pretty much everything from heel protectors to spare hair grips; a first aid kit to white gaffer tape (which gets used more than you’d think!)

unique small wedding venues in birmingham

The Discovery Terrace

If you’re looking to include some natural elements into your big city elopement then The Discovery Terrace is the space for you. This exquisitely designed and immaculately kept garden space has sweeping views across the city and makes for a lovely private ceremony space or drinks reception venue. Invite your guests to soak in the view with a glass of champagne as they toast your marriage or keep it to yourselves as you exchange vows in your own secret garden.

The Book Rotunda

Do you and your future spouse share a passion for literature? Then this is your dream space.  Whilst the grandeur of the main open space may be a little overwhelming for smaller parties the warmth of the nooks and crannies surrounded by books, and the chance to wander the stacks ensconced in your own private book loves paradise is too good to give up! This space requires no theming, even for the grandest parties, and provides peace and quiet and a chance to escape the hub-bub of the city centre outside.

The Door Theatre Space

This quirky little theatre space may seat 140 but if you’re looking to combine your love of theatre with an intimate ceremony space this gives you plenty of options without filling a huge theatre space. With numerous lighting, costume and musical options plus the chance to get ready in your own dressing room the sky is the limit for weddings here.  Keep your small party of guests entertained with back-stage tours, theatrical workshops and themed events which will leave them speechless!

The Suites

If you’re looking for spaces that are less theatrical and a little more private how about a private suite with built in dining options, views over the landscaped gardens and internal balcony views over the library?  These suites can be scaled up or down based on party size but all come with the option for in-room dining, drinks and entertainment. So even if you want a table for two on your wedding day the suites can provide you with options made just for you.

About Tiny Weddings Hosts

Tiny Weddings was created by Carly and Claire because of their passion for small weddings and helping a couple to have the wedding that suits them.  They know that smaller weddings are on the rise, for various reasons, and they don’t think wedding fairs are catering for these couples.

Carly has been blogging about elopements since she eloped in 2015. Carly has planned and executed weddings, fairs and events for some of the UK’s most recognisable venues and attractions and continues to work with events venues day to day as a consultant. When planning her own elopement wedding she saw little choice for those who wanted a great wedding without a huge guest list, so Carly began seeking out suppliers of tiny wedding and elopements around the world and now writes her own blog at www.epicelopement.co.uk.

Claire is a wedding planner, specialising in elopements and small destination weddings in Central Park, New York, for couples from all over the world. She has been doing this for over six years and has planned almost two hundred and fifty weddings so far. All of her weddings have had under fifty guests and most have between five and fifteen guests. She knows the tiny wedding market well. She knows what drives a couple to choose a tiny wedding and what values and priorities are popular for the couples that take this route.

Follow the Tiny Weddings Fair on your preferred social media: Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram, or sign up to our mailing list to never miss an update, and get details about all the exhibitors, workshops, tours and talks.  Don’t forget to buy your tickets in advance, to save 50% off on-the-day prices and to be entered in to our prize draw!

I am a freelance hair and make up artist.  I provide a service from your own home or hotel, or any other location you choose.  I will have a consultation to get to know you, your skin and your skincare and make up routine to tailor a personal look for your big day.  I have had five years experience and am trained in bridal and occasional make u, editorial and photographic, stage, TV and film make up.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

I love that they feel more natural and more intimate.  You really get an insight into the couple and it all feels more personal to them, showing the smaller intimate details of the wedding, for the perfect day focusing on each other rather than the guests.  The closeness of family and friends means that it can still be a perfect dream wedding; even though a grand fairy-tale wedding would be incredible, sometimes it’s not possible and the smaller details mean more.

How do you think the couples are different what working with a smaller wedding?

Overall, I don’t think that the couples are that different.  They all want everything to be perfect on their wedding day.  But when working on a smaller wedding there is more time to get to know the couple better on a personal level.

Leonie MUA Tiny Weddings Fair 4

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

I don’t think there would be a difference!  I feel that every bride would be treated the same and would receive the same standard of service whether the wedding is big or small.

If you could work on a tiny wedding with any theme, what would it be?

I would love to work on a wedding in the woods, a magical and intimate setting, keeping everything simple.  For a theme I would love to work on a boho wedding, something very free spirited; with natural colours and very 70s.

Leonie MUA Tiny Weddings Fair 3

Can you give an example of a small wedding that you have worked on in the past?

I met with the couple before the booking to get to know a little about them and their back story and what they wanted for the wedding.  I arranged  atrial for the bride and her two bridesmaids, to try different styles and looks for them, all tailored individually while keeping it simple, which is what the bride wanted.  So we were all set for the morning of the wedding, and everything went very smoothly.

Do you think that smaller weddings are on the increase?

I think they might be.  This is potentially due to cost and society.  Today, couples are investing in saving and buying houses, and choosing that over a big wedding.  They are choosing to set up their future together, so they have a small and more intimate wedding, still a celebration of their love, but in many ways more special.  Smaller weddings mean that you have the people that you love there, rather than distant family members that you might be inviting out of duty.

What do you love about tiny weddings?

I have only just started the business and feel that tiny weddings are the way forward for me. It means that I can give full attention to the needs of the bride and groom.

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

I think small weddings don’t necessarily get the coverage they deserve. Couples can give more time and energy to a smaller wedding making sure everything is perfect.

Clare's Faux Flowers Tiny Weddings Fair 4

What are the main differences in the way you do business when dealing with a tiny wedding?

I have only really worked with people planning small occasions, I haven’t worked on big events, and I find that smaller events suit me well.

What are your goals in supplying a small wedding?

I would like to create flowers that make the wedding party happy and remember their special day, in a way that they would not want to go back to real flowers again.

Tiny Weddings Fair - My Fabric Flowers

Louise from My Fabric Flowers is another fantastic exhibitor who will be at the Tiny Weddings Fair on 30th Sept at the Wycombe Swan.  She makes bouquets and other accessories out of her own handmade fabric flowers.  She is based in Princes Risborough, Bucks and makes bouquets and centrepieces out of fabric, lace, buttons, brooches, ribbons, and any embellishments you might suggest!  Come along to chat with her on the 30th September!

Tiny Weddings Fair - My Fabric Flowers whitefeather4

Tell us a little about yourself and what you make.

My Fabric Flowers came into being about eighteen months ago as I wanted to create alternative handmade bridal bouquets, making them with fabric, buttons, brooches, embellishments, lace and ribbons and any other articles I can find.   They are bespoke and one-offs so you will never see another one the same.  They can also be displayed as a centrepiece on a table or grouped together as a fabric flower decoration.  Shabby chic,  boho, vintage wedding themes are very popular with my clients.

Tiny Weddings Fair - My Fabric Flowers red

What do you like about tiny weddings?

Small weddings are very interesting as they can be more intimate and can allow for more expression of the the couple in their decoration or where they choose to hold their wedding.  The larger the wedding the venue has to come into play and questions of can everyone fit into the church and what is wanted or would like to have has to take second place to a certain extent.

Do you think smaller weddings are on the rise?

Smaller weddings really do suit some people, so I hope it will continue.  But often couples might feel guilty, or pressured to invite all of their family and friends.

Tiny Weddings Fair - My Fabric Flowers gold4

What sort of tiny weddings would especially like to be involved in?

A woodland wedding with the trees lit up and all the tables decorated would be lovely to be involved with.

Have you been involved in smaller weddings, what did you do?

I have been involved with a couple of tiny weddings which have been easier to manage and provide bouquets and decorations for.  One of my clients had her reception in her own large garden.  The other wedding was also using the clients’ garden and having a background of the river, it was a great venue.

Tiny Weddings Fair - Liquid Mobile Bar_5290

I am Keshell and I own Liquid Mobile Bar. We have been running for two years, this year being our main year we have been booked up all through the summer!  We sell luxurious drinks covering pretty much any style of drink! Such as milkshakes, fresh juices, iced coffee and teas, prosecco, beers, cocktails… any anything the couple request. All are made using the best ingredients and are finished at a very high quality standard each with an extra special touch.  Working from a beautifully converted vintage horse box we fit into any theme of wedding perfectly, our bar never fails to impress especially with our magical fairy lights brightening up the scene. In addition as our bar is white we can always add some extra special decorations to match the theme of your magical day.

What drinks will you be selling to couples on the day at the Tiny Weddings Fair?

For the fair, we will be serving up our mocktails, fresh juices, hot chocolates and milkshakes. There will be many different flavours of each drink type for you to select from which is what we also take to wedding so all will be able to enjoy the treats we provide.

Tiny Weddings Fair - Liquid Mobile Bar_1028

What are your plans for the coming year?

This year my aim is to focus on being a part of more weddings, especially smaller sized weddings as they are more close-knit and special in their own unique ways. I feel smaller weddings are able to reflect more of the bride and groom’s personalities. So I love how this Tiny Weddings fair focuses on this target and are able to bring very high quality businesses in contact with these brides and grooms.

Can you tell us a little about what drinks and refreshments you can offer for weddings?

We offer any style of drink the couple wish from prosecco to bottled beers. We do fresh juices and milkshakes which are nice for an afternoon service and our cocktails are always a hit for the evening time. Hot chocolates are perfect for the winter weddings to heat up your guests too. All of our drinks are made using only the highest quality products and are decorated each to a high elaborate standard.

Tiny Weddings Fair - Liquid Mobile Bar_4841

How do you think the couples are different when working with a large wedding versus a tiny wedding?

The couple are able to have more say on the entire wedding. The little details can be explored further and clearly seen rather than being overshadowed by the larger wedding’s expectations. Many couples who choose a smaller wedding do so to avoid stress, and it is always my goal to relieve as much stress as possible prior to the big day, nobody likes stress!

Give an example of a tiny wedding you have worked on and what you did for the couple.

I had a wedding back in July for an Indian couple. I established a very close connection to the bride talking for hours about ideas she had for the day and how she wanted things to run. They had me in for a morning service in the end, serving up luxury milkshakes and juices to the guests from 8am until 10am but we stayed through till lunch as it was such a wonderful celebration.

Tiny Weddings Fair - Liquid Mobile Bar_6347

If you could work on a tiny wedding anywhere in the world with any theme what would it be?

It would be a festival theme wedding in the middle of the countryside. With a boho classic style theme in the open air for any couple. Not only would this be a picturesque wedding to work for but I secretly would like something similar for my special day in the future.
